Description

San Mauro Pascoli is the birthplace of the famous poet Giovanni Pascoli. This territory, situated between the Uso and Rubicone rivers, the Via Emilia, and the sea, is where he was born and spent his childhood.

The long history of the town of San Mauro is linked to the poet even in its name, which was changed in his honor from San Mauro to San Mauro Pascoli in 1932 by Royal Decree.

At the heart of the town is the 18th-century Palazzo Municipale, in front of which stands the former oratory of San Sebastiano, a tiny building dating back to the 18th century, originally serving as a chapel-oratory for the nearby convent of the Ursuline nuns. Today, it has been completely restored and is used as an exhibition hall by the Pascolian Academy (normally closed to the public, open on occasions of events and exhibitions).

Continuing on a walk, you'll reach the chapel of Madonna dell’Acqua, a centuries-old church that now houses two plaques dedicated to the Fallen. A few steps away is the Casa Pascoli Museum, a national monument since 1924; it was here that the poet Giovanni Pascoli was born on December 31, 1855. Inside, in addition to the kitchen, you can see the study where rare editions of some of his works and numerous handwritten letters to friends are displayed, along with the old wooden crib in the bedroom.

Outside, there is a beautiful garden with some of the plants mentioned by the poet in his poems, and at the center of the garden, on a limestone pedestal, stands the bronze bust dedicated to the poet.

Just 2 km from the town stands Villa Torlonia. From the 18th century until the mid-19th century, the Torlonia Princes established one of the most important and extensive agricultural estates in Romagna here. Even today, you can see the imposing structures of this beautiful estate, called "La Torre." Here, the father of the poet, Ruggero Pascoli, managed the possessions of Prince Alessandro Torlonia.

A visit to the new multimedia museum is highly recommended, as it allows you to immerse yourself in Pascoli's poetry in a journey filled with evocative experiences: the cellars of La Torre are transformed into multisensory settings where sounds, words, and images engage all the senses.
